How the Switch Switched My View on 'Mario Kart'

A Game That I Never Thought I Would Play

Don't judge a game by its cover.

In my years of playing video games, I have never given Mario Kart the chance. Why? To be honest, it's not that I disliked the characters or the concept, it's just that I was always an active FPS game player. Why should I bother playing a game that didn't involve killing the other team? Well as I grew older I started to consider other games and their own styles.

Like I mentioned, I was always playing some sort of first-person shooting game whether it was Call Of Duty Black Ops or Rainbow Six Siege. As long as it included a gun and people to shoot I was good. I grew up loving those types of games because it was full of suspense and tactics. I plan on joining the Navy after high school and I also plan on playing these FPS games when I have free time. Anyway, I was never trying any different video games until I was introduced to the Nintendo Switch.

I got embroiled in the Mario series after I got the Nintendo Switch for a Christmas present. I was looking forward to this present for a couple of different reasons. To start, the Switch is a unique console. Now I'm not trying to sound like an advertiser, but it really is unique. First off you can use this device like a regular tablet.

Plus it's pretty cool that you can also connect it to your television to have a bigger gameplay view. With the Joy Cons, you cannot only pair them with the Switch but also to your phone. The battery life seems fair enough with three to six hours of playtime (depending on the game of course). You can also see how long you have played a certain game. So sure it's pricey, but it's worth it.

Now let's get back to my story of how my first Mario Kart gameplay experience was. So it was Christmas and I opened up my presents and of the top presents I got were a PS4 and the Nintendo Switch. Of course, I was thrilled about getting both of those consoles but I had to make a choice. Which console would I play first? I ended up playing on the PS4 first and I let the Switch charge in the meantime.

After a couple of hours of enjoying some Batman Arkham Knight on the PS4, I took a break and progressed to the Switch. There were a couple of different Switch games that I received as presents. Those included Super Mario Odessy, Splatoon 2, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I enjoyed some of my time playing Super Mario Odessy first, then I went and tried Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I was making a turning point from the minute I loaded the game and began to play.

To be honest, I'm not sure why I enjoyed it so much. It could have been for the different game modes like Renegade and Balloon Battle or just the races that got me hooked. Do I have any regrets? Yes, I do. I regret not getting more involved in different games like Mario.

If I had only given it a chance when I was younger it might have changed my viewpoint then, but I'm glad that I gave it a chance. There still are other games out their that I haven't yet tried. My next adventure lies in Zelda Breath Of The Wild. I keep hearing how fun and addicting the game is so hopefully it lives up to what everyone says it is. Once I have played it, I promise to write my experience with it because it's fun for me to write articles for your entertainment.

So next time you see a game that you haven't tried; give it a chance. You might just fall in love with it.
