No Man's Sky seems like it's at the tip of everyone's tongue these days and there's a pretty good reason why. The game is touted to be absolutely massive quintillions of planets with a lot of things to see and do. There are planets to be explored and things to marvel at being brought a scope that hasn't really been done before. In fact, there's a high chance you might not even get to see all there is to see. With all this scale and grandeur, you'd expect it to be done by some massive studio with a bevy of resources at their disposal. Right?

That couldn't be further from the truth. The mad scientists creating No Man's Sky, Hello Games, are actually a very small crew of ten that have managed to create one of the most hotly anticipated games of 2016.

So what's it like to work at Hello Games and make No Man's Sky? A unique photo documentary entitled 'Making Games Is Fun' gives us a first-hand look at the game dev studio.

This is How No Man's Sky Was Made

Based Guildford, UK, the office looks like what I imagine every small start up office might look like. Cool looking chairs, a place to play and unwind, and a lot of creative inspiration plastered all over the walls.

Basically, it's the dream work environment that I'll probably never have.

I kind of want to live there. Not that the environment seems conducive to a random squatter from LA, but if they ever need someone to clean up and make tea, I'm down.

Creativity and Humor Abound

You know what seems like fun? Making games. Although there is certainly a lot of work put behind it (especially with such a compact crew), the office gives off a vibe that they try not to get too bogged down in the serious stuff.

The office is stuffed with artwork and other fun motivational tools to help keep the team going during long nights coding No Man's Sky's planets, creatures, and algorithms.

It's definitely a far cry from having a lone poster of a cat hanging on a branch telling you to hang in there.

Hard Work To Be Had

The photo documentary does a great job of showcasing every aspect of what it's like to be in an indie dev studio. Sure, it can be a fun atmosphere, but there's still work to be done.

Fun smiles mix in with focused stares with a few face palms mixed in for good measure. Making games is fun, sure, but it's a truckload of hard work to live up to the expectations of such a hyped game.

Just like any good team, when there's time to laugh, they laugh. When it's time to get down to business, though, they put in work so that they can push out the best game they can.

'Making Games is Fun' is a fascinating look inside working over at Hello Games and I would highly recommend you check out the whole thing for yourself.

No Man's Sky coming to PS4 August 9th in North America and on PC August 12th.
