'Nancy Drew': The Video Game Series

A Game Series That is Better than it Sounds

I want to start this article off by saying I really and truly recommend this video game series. It sounds so bad and awful the first time you hear about it, but I promise you that it is great.

Which Nancy Drew games are the best?

I haven't quite played all of the Nancy Drew games...yet, but here is a list of Her Interactive Nancy Drew games I have played, along with their individual review of the game. There are currently 31 games by Her Interactive that follow the Nancy Drew plot. The later games are much better than the earlier, so please don't feel like you have to start at the first one.

'The Haunting of Castle Mallow'- 10/10

I actually never completely finished this one, but I got very close to the end. I tried to think of something bad about this one and couldn't. I love how immersed I was in the game. I love the characters, I love the atmosphere, the stories, the puzzles, the feminism, and the game itself looks good. I think a decent amount of money was put into this game.

Also, something I learned in this game later came up in one of my Universty Lectures. So you can actually learn stuff from these games that could apply to real life.

'Legend of the Crystal Skull'- 9/10

This was the first Nancy Drew game that I ever played, and I fell in love with it immediately. The story is good, the characters are good, the puzzles are strong, and it is a visually stunning game to look at.

'Warnings at Waverley Academy'- 9/10

I love how real this one felt. There was time added to the game, a fun mini game, and of course, a secret cult.

'The Creature of Kapu Cave'- 9/10

I think I might be a little bias on this one because I love ocean and underwater life, which is a small part of the game. However, there is nothing nicer than a nice intro place like in this game. You can spend the beginning of this game in tourist attraction area making shell necklaces and eating frozen treats with Big Island Mike.

'The Silent Spy'- 8/10

I wouldn't recommend this one as your first game to try because it is Nancy's background story, after all, but it is definitely one of the better ones. I love the cookie making stall, the visit Loch Ness, and the dramatic zip line between two buildings.

'The Captive Curse'- 8/10

The story is the better part of this game. If you do play this make sure to talk lots to the old lady in the dining room. She has quite the story to tell. The game itself is also very visually stunning and full of fun jump scares.

'The Phantom of Venice'- 8/10

Whatever you do, don't get suckered into letting that guy talk about tiles to you. He will not stop until you try to leave, and then he gets offended. Everyone needs a hobby, I guess. However, this is definitely one of the games that Her Interactive invested time and money into. It's a must to add onto your Nancy Drew List.

'Shadow at the Water's Edge'- 7/10

I was a bit disappointed in this one. I just expected more. With that said, it was still amazing. It was gorgeous and got me hooked on trying to visit Japan in real life. Oh, and it's scary. None of the other Nancy Drew games have a horror theme like this one. It actually made me jump.

'The Shattered Medallion'- 7/10

While this game is very different from what Her Interactive would normally do, I still absolutely loved it. Something about being in a game show was super fun. I just hope they don't try to do it twice. Its uniqueness it what makes it.

'Sea of Darkness'- 6/10

It was a great game, it simply just wasn't as good as some of the other games Her Interactive have published. I guess they can't all be winners.

'Secrets Can Kill Remastered'- 4/10

My biggest problem with the remastered version is that they tried too hard to make the game longer, thus adding in tedious and almost unrelated clues to finish the game. I still think it's worth play though, just don't feel bad when you have to cheat to finish the game.

'Tomb of the Lost Queen'- 2/10

While this game certainly got me interested in learning more about ancient Egypt, it was by far the most frustrating puzzles I have played in all the Nancy Drew Series. I constantly felt like I didn't know what to do next and the plot was overall lacking. Still decent graphics though.

Which ones are the worst?

There are two Nancy Drew games that don't follow the original series, and while they are cheap, they are still not worth it. They are called Nancy Drew Dossier instead of simply just Nancy Drew, so you know they were never really meant to be a part of the final collection.

'Nancy Drew Dosier: Resorting to Danger & Lights, Camera, Curses!'

The thing that I really don't like about these two games is that I bought them thinking they would be the same as the rest and was upset to realize that it was nothing close to the quality of the others. The art is nowhere as good, there is nowhere to explore, and it is by all means a point and click game. In fact, it is a 'hidden object' game, meaning you look at a nonmoving picture and find hidden objects that I guess are supposed to be the clues?
