Episode 1 of Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series has been released, giving way to a new type of Telltale game. Being the first video game to tie in directly with the Marvel franchise, as well as being superhero themed, #GuadiansoftheGalaxy treads fresh ground for the comics company as well. Indeed, Marvel may be leading the charge in cinematic features, but it's been decidedly lacking in quality video games over the past few years. This episodic graphic adventure game series could finally change all that.

If #Marvel's joint venture with Telltale pays off, we could see more Marvel stories adapted. And if Episode 1, "Tangled Up in Blue," is anything to go by, the rest of Telltale's Guardians of the Galaxy will convince fans that Telltale is a perfect partner for Marvel-brand games.

Breakdown Of Episode 1, 'Tangled Up in Blue'

From the get-go, we see the Guardians in hot pursuit of Thanos. They've tracked him down to an old Kree temple that houses the Forge of Eternity. Thanos attempts to steal the artifact before he's intercepted by the Guardians. A battle ensues, which almost sees the team completely killed off by #Thanos. The Mad Titan doesn't even have the Infinity Gauntlet and still presents a major obstacle for the team, yet they're able to defeat him, all thanks to Rocket's massive raygun.

The last moments of this scene depict Peter Quill struggling to reach the raygun, which he then uses to burn a hole right through Thanos's chest. With Thanos dead, the Guardians rejoice in their victory, but it's only the beginning of their perilous journey.

The gang is then faced with another dilemma: Who to turn Thanos's body over to? Do they claim the bounty on Thanos from the Nova Corps, or do they make a bigger score by selling the body to the Collector?

Who Should You Sell Thanos's Corpse to?

Of course, Rocket wants to sell to the Collector for a big payoff, but Peter Quill is left with the decision because of his status as leader. At this point in the game, it's up to the player to decide. I decided on taking the Nova Corps route. Although, I was surprised to find out that the bounty on Thanos wouldn't be received right away, and only then in installments, so it seems of more immediate benefit to sell to the Collector.

After the deal for Thanos's corpse goes down, a group of Kree mercenaries led by Hala attack the Guardians, their purpose being to steal the Forge of Eternity, which Peter nabbed during his battle with Thanos. The Kree are successful in stealing the Forge from Peter, but he is quick to follow, tailing Hala back to her ship where a fight ensues. Unlike his encounter with Thanos, Quill isn't victorious this time around. Hala stabs Peter in the chest with her blade, killing him. The rest of the Guardians arrive shortly after and take possession of Peter's corpse.

When they get back to the Milano, the Guardians are shocked by the sight of Peter's lifeless body. But by some miracle, the Forge of Eternity, which was reclaimed by the Guardians, activates itself and revives Peter. The episode then ends, leading into the preview of Episode 2, which sees the Guardians encountering more of Hala in her pursuit of the Forge.

Telltale's Guardians Of The Galaxy Covers a Lot of Ground

For a single episode of a #Telltale game, Guardians of the Galaxy has already covered quite a a bit of narrative territory. Between stopping Thanos and introducing a new, arguably more insidious villain in Hala, that's a large chunk of plot explored. And the story doesn't just end with the Guardians. Episode 1 also features nods to other Marvel stars like Howard the Duck, Cosmo and #Yondu, all characters who had been teased in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1.

To add to that, several elements from the MCU's Guardians have been folded into Telltale's game. Even the Guardians' appearance is identical to that of the #MCU's Guardians, except for Gamora, who features some odd yellow makeup around her eyes. Other than that small difference, the team is decidedly similar.

Apart from physicality, the team dynamic is practically identical as well. Rocket is his obnoxious self. Drax is the literal tough guy who everyone wants to have around. Gamora is usually off brooding somewhere on her own. And of course, Peter is still the overconfident, charming leader. With those similarities duly noted, it seems Telltale's Guardians of the Galaxy is an obvious of a tie-in for the MCU.

Telltale does an excellent job setting up a new era for Marvel-brand games with Guardians of the Galaxy, which could lead the way for future high-profile episodic video games.
