A Quest to Capture Beldum

My Participation in 'Pokemon Go' October Community Day

Pokemon trainers across the world, including myself, participated in the Pokemon Go October Community Day on Oct. 21—my first Community Day since moving back to Spokane Valley last month.

The Pokemon Go Community Day events are a great opportunity for trainers to spend a few hours outside catching Pokemon, as well as getting some fresh air and exercise and exploring some of their favorite local, public areas.

Every Community Day features a Pokemon that will appear for a few hours, as well as other bonuses, such as triple stardust or decreased mileage on hatching eggs. It is also an opportunity for trainers to catch shiny versions of the featured Pokemon.

I enjoy participating in Community Day events because it gives me extra motivation to go outside to catch Pokemon and earn more experience points. When I lived in Ritzville, I participated in every Community Day event and would usually walk through the historical downtown district and city park to collect Pokemon.

There are a variety of reasons I enjoy playing Pokemon Go in general. It allows me a chance to exercise while playing a mobile game from one of my favorite franchises.

In Ritzville, there were not a lot of local Pokemon trainers, which made it a little lonely at times, but also easier to capture rival gyms. Since Spokane and Spokane Valley are larger in population, more people appear to play the game in both cities. There are also more gyms and Pokestops scattered throughout the area.

The featured Pokemon for October was Beldum, a robotic Pokemon that is the first in the Metagross evolutionary line introduced in the third generation of games. It is a steel and psychic type Pokemon that is a formidable foe for any opponent.

In the Pokemon anime and games, Metagross is the mainstay of Hoenn Pokemon League Champion Steven Stone’s team.

Beldum’s evolution, Metagross is one of my favorite Pokemon from the Hoenn region. It was one of the first Pokemon I received from trading from my old friend Andrew and is a type e that I’ve used in tournaments. Metagross is a solid Pokemon to have in your lineup as its steel exterior gives it toughness and its psychic attacks add extra power.

Pokemon Along Pine Street

For the October Community Day, I spent most of my Pokemon hunting along Broadway and Pine streets in the valley. The intersection of Broadway and Pine is a good spot as there are three Pokestops and two nearby gyms which attract Pokemon. Trainers will find more Pokestops as they walk east along Broadway. If they walk up Vercler Street, they will find the Spokcastle Pokemon Gym.

In about 90 minutes, I caught enough Beldum to evolve one into a Metang and later into a Metagross. The Metagross I evolved has 2,785 combat power, making it the fifth most powerful Pokemon in my lineup after my Gyarados. This Metagross includes a special Meteor Mash attack.

Like most trainers, I give nicknames to my Pokemon. I named my Metagross Beestinger, after the Dungeons and Dragons character Rosey Beestinger of Acquisitions Incorporated, played by game designer Kate Welch.

In addition to catching Beldum, I captured several other Pokemon, one being Shroomish, which I evolved into a Breloom. I also captured three Turtwig, which gave me enough candy to evolve one of them into a Grotle. When I have 100 Turtwig candy, I can evolve it into a Torterra.

Along with catching Pokemon, I managed to defeat three rival gyms at the Pine Street Water Tower, Spokcastle and Opportunity Church. What makes these gyms special is they were the first three gyms I captured after returning to Spokane.

While I had fun participating in Community Day, it might be my last for awhile. I am about to start a new job and there is a good chance I will be working on Sunday afternoons.

Still, I do plan on playing Pokemon Go whenever I can and hopefully get to level 40.
