Far Cry's villains are often exalted for possessing a unique brand of eccentric evil, turning the most brightly-lit, exotic locales into their own dark and twisted playgrounds. In the past, video game villains have fallen into neat templates and stereotypes: zombies, Nazis, Nazi zombies, aliens, "foreign" terrorists, militant groups and the like. But there's something about Far Cry 5's villainy that is both uncomfortably familiar and yet new ground for the series, introducing a distinctly Americanized adversary.

This could be seen as a growing trend if you look at games like #ResidentEvil7, where you were pitted against a pseudo-zombified white family in the bayou, or #Outlast2 with its inspiration taken from an American religious cult. The direction over the last couple years has seen an interesting shift. Now, Far Cry 5 is set to push that paradigm even further.

#FarCry5 will become the first shooter to take place on American soil against American citizens, and it's exactly what we needed to experience.

Far Cry 5 is going to re-align the franchise.

Some fans were disappointed by the gameplay in Far Cry Primal, as it diverged from the established traditions of the franchise. Although it was still a solid game and introduced a lot of unique features, it never really met the demands of the core fans.

Far Cry 5 looks to breathe new life in to the franchise as players are dropped into the fictitious world of Hope County, Montana. As the newest junior deputy, you're drawn into a silent coup to usurp control of the entire area by a fanatical doomsday cult, the Project at Eden's Gate.

Led by its fanatical leader, the cult forces the townspeople to bend to their will, either by choice or by force. It's up to you to raise up a revolution against the cult. taking assistance from the townspeople, guns for hire, fangs for hire and an incredible arsenal of weapons.

Take the fight by air, land, or sea.

The Far Cry series has always been about choice. One major improvement in this installment is the ability to engage in aerial dog fights over Big Sky Country and drive everything from the iconic American muscle car to a big-rig tanker, an ATV across the backwoods, or even a variety of boats across the lakes and river in Hope County.

Whichever way you want to step into the action, you have the ability to travel there in style.

Utilize the locals, lead the resistance.

The various Far Cry locations have always featured their fair share of locals, but in Far Cry 5 it's your task to serve and protect the citizens while also using them to undermine and overthrow the cult.

In Far Cry 5 there are many characters that you'll meet in the game that all want the same thing you do; to survive and live a life without fear. The teaser video focused on Father Jerome is just a taste of the countless locals who were affected by the forceful occupancy of the Project at Eden's Gate.

The stories of characters like Jerome and Mary are just a part of the bigger tale of the revolution that you'll be tasked with growing through Far Cry 5.

Create chaos and take down the cult.

Ultimately, your goal is to undermine the Project at Eden's Gate, but that will prove to be easier said than done. Throughout the game you'll have access to a huge number of vehicles, weapons and tools, as well as the ability to hire Guns or Fangs.

  • Guns for Hire is pretty self explanatory as you can bring in civilians willing to cause chaos and damage anything in front of them. If you're paying they're fighting.
  • Fangs for Hire is a unique twist as it lets you bring in a variety of ferocious animals: bears, wolves, cougars in order to compliment whatever playstyle you're choosing.

The fun part of Far Cry has always been the ability to step into the action and plot your own course. Far Cry 5 is taking that to the next step and putting you in a story that matches your own uniquely twisted sensibility.

Far Cry 5 hits shelves on February 27th, 2018.
