The Far Cry series has been numerous things over the years, and controversial is undoubtedly one of them. Through the history of Far Cry, we've gone to countless exotic locales, but the directive has remained the same: Survive, evade, and murder the locals. Through our character, we've visited the South Pacific, a fictional country tucked in the Himalayas, an unnamed African country, and an Asian-Pacific island group.

Now, Far Cry 5 is set to drop us into one of the most chaotic locations yet in the heartland of rural America. More specifically, the fictitious Hope County, Montana. An official Ubisoft press release gives us more insight into the world of Far Cry 5:

"As the new junior deputy of fictional Hope County, Montana, players will find that their arrival accelerates a years-long silent coup by a fanatical doomsday cult, the Project at Eden's Gate, igniting a violent takeover of the county. Caught off guard and drawn into a power struggle, players must disrupt the carefully laid plans of the Project at Eden’s Gate and fan the fires of resistance to help liberate the Hope County community and themselves."

Far Cry 5 is set to drop us into one of the most politically and socially unstable locations that players have ever seen, and it's going to be glorious. So far, all signs point to Far Cry 5 being bigger, badder and more dangerous than any of the previous installments.

Far Cry 5 will see players isolated and under siege by the militaristic doomsday cult, Project at Eden's Gate, and all of their gun-toting, fear-mongering devotees. In previous games, the main opposition has been driven by political clout, social power or financial gain. Far Cry 5 will pit us against the most dangerous adversary of all: People with the belief that they are living in their religious freedom.

But don't worry, we won't be alone in our struggle to topple the cult. Throughout the game, you'll be able to enlist residents of Hope County to join the resistance and recruit Guns for Hire from a large collection of characters. We'll even be able utilize to "Fangs for Hire," which are specialized animals like bears and cougars to be used as a diversion, or just to cause havoc for our viewing pleasure. In Far Cry 5, the methods you use to overthrow the cult are all a part of the bigger story, and can change how you experience the world of Hope County.

Regardless of whether you've played five minutes of Far Cry or you've been playing for five years, Far Cry 5 is setting itself up to be one of the must-have games of next year. With a wealth of great stories, voice acting and incredible scenarios, Far Cry is a franchise with legions of devoted fans that likely can't wait to step into the fray in the American heartland.

The blend of beautifully serene landscapes and brutality of the cult is sure to bring to light some of the darker demons of society itself. Are you ready to face the greatest threat to humanity?

Far Cry 5 will be available on February 27, 2018, coming to Windows PC, PlayStation 4 & Pro, and the Xbox One & Project Scorpio.
