A love child?

So Minecraft and The Hunger Games walk into a bar. They get a little drunk, and a third-person shooter game drives them home. Nine months later is the release of Fortnite.

(Disclaimer: this analysis ignores the true history and progression of this game and this particular analysis is based on the Battle Royale game play version.)

This analysis began one night while I was watching my boyfriend play Fortnite. I am aware of the gaming world and for the most part enjoy watching them, but I can’t play for shit. I had made the comment, “so this is like Minecraft on steroids?” and lacking the energy to actually correct me, he replied, “Yeah, basically is.”

Like I said, I am aware of the gaming world, but in no way am I a part of it. Everyone has their thing. My boyfriend plays games. I read books and watch shit TV (any Office fans in the audience??). However, recently with my literary analysis class, as well as all of my psych classes, I am seeing connections between literally everything. It’s like all of a sudden the world is a giant game of connect the dots.

Minecraft with Better Graphics: I used to play Minecraft with my brothers. It was long and tedious, yet rewarding. You are a little block figure running around with an axe and you destroy things, collecting resources, and then you can build using what you have collected. Everything is in blocks like a blown up 8-bit. It is simple and practically anyone can pick it up. There is also a survival mode which includes creepers that are trying to kill you. Fortnite is very similar on one level. You are on an island and you start with nothing but a pickaxe and you have to collect supplies to survive. Most of what you want to find are guns and ammo, but you are also able to collect resources to build structures with. You can decide the way that you want to play the game, but I find that a combination of the strategies seems to work best. You can collect these resources to build a structure to camp in or when you find yourself in tricky situations you can quickly build walls and structures to protect yourself from being shot at. You can also use this feature to more easily traverse the landscape. It is a little more complex as you aren’t building up block by block but instead you are putting up walls, stairs, and roofs that speed up the process. The graphics in Fortnite are very appealing, and the world that the developers has built has so much detail in it. Major props because it is beautiful. Also, the initial Fortnite was a zombie survival game, but it has evolved since then.

Hunger Games? I read the books and watching the battle royale format of this game being played, I could draw many parallels. The map is an island and you are dropped there from the battle bus and there isn’t a way to get off, and your goal is to be the last one standing. This is similar to the arena in which the tributes are put to fight to the death. The map has many different areas where you can drop such as Tomato Town, Tilted Towers, Loot Lake, Retail Row, etc. In the arenas in The Hunger Games, there are many different areas that the tributes can go to to play to the strengths of their districts. There are forests, lakes, deserts, etc., and they choose where they want to go when the game starts. In Fortnite, there is a storm closing in on the island that forces confrontation as the numbers dwindle down. You have to keep moving towards the eye of the storm, but be careful of running into another player. In the Hunger Games, the game maker and board control this closing in. They cause fires, or send packs of hybrid monsters near tributes when the action level starts going down. They use these to manipulate the game and force confrontation for a better show. There are also versions of Fortnite where you can play with a partner or a group of people to try and win the game as a team. In the Hunger Games, tributes often form alliances to last longer; however, a difference is that there can only be one winner.

In conclusion, I see the Fortnite Battle Royale to be a hybrid of Minecraft and The Hunger Games in a third person shooter format. Admittedly, I don't know a whole lot about video games and I am absolutely terrible at playing them. However, I am kind of obsessed with the world of Fortnite and the theories behind it—especially lately, with the sightings of the meteor.
