New Games New Worlds

Let's get this started off right. Hi! My name is Michelle and I am now a moderately average gamer. I started gaming when I was about ten with my first Nintendo 64 system, and moved my way up, though as fun as it was, I was never the compulsive gamer I tend to be now. That's okay though, I met a friend about a year ago (we will call him Roy), he knew nothing of gaming platforms or RPG or W.O.W. I had to explain to him that he was cool and it's more fun to learn while you play anyways. You discover more and look for the finite details game designers hope you find, like Easter eggs, more trophies, or even some inside jokes that you uncover. Like when I was ten I also had a PlayStation 1 and my favorite game was Spyro. Everything about that game I loved: the different levels, different worlds, and the monsters you battle. You can fly and you save people while collecting gemstones!! Who wouldn't think that's cool.

That is the beauty of the gaming industry, it is here for you! You become whatever you want, whoever you want and no one judges you! Unless you're a key player in Overwatch and completely cost your team the game...(Just Kidding). You choose and design your world. Whether you battle, race, or survive, it's YOUR world.

I got more into games just recently. I graduated college about eight months ago and I have had nothing, other than helping my friend run his bar at night, to do. I went from 0 to 60 in college, always on the go, so my boyfriend introduced me to Overwatch. It was fast-paced and riveting and putting the game down wasn't an option, even though I got off to a rough start. I began playing games he'd already finished, listening to podcasts and learning about different gaming platforms. It was all new and exciting. I felt like I was me again.

In college, my downtime was spent with friends plays Dungeons and Dragons and comic book reading. Gaming brought back all the night fantasies and imagination just took me to infinity. Getting back to the keyboard allowed me to write, which is what my degree was for, English with a focus in medieval studies. After graduation I didn't have a clue, it was like I moved away from everyone and everything, and I was alone. Online gaming takes the isolation away and I even go out with my friends I have made online. Because of my historical focus, I gear towards RPG games such as G.O.W. and Skyrim. Or even Dragon Age, which I just started my campaign for. The closer to the fantasy world with goblins, dragons, witches, trolls, ogres, and seeing the different mythologies on each creature, helps me write and create my own worlds. Unlike me, Roy had a vast imagination but didn't know who to channel it with or even how to channel it. Roy has an autoimmune disease and isn't able to work, so he sits at home all day and he HATES it. When we met he was excited but hesitant to play with me, he didn't want to look like a newbie who didn't know what he was doing. I assured him, we all start out that way.

Roy decided to go on this journey with me and it helped us both have more confidence in our thoughts and utilize the ability of being alone to our advantage. Roy even built a lot of tolerance for being on his P.C. So now he works online as a customer service rep because he wanted to be productive. I am proud of him. Gaming gave us something no one can take, CONFIDENCE. We have grown so much in the last eight months that I can truly say we have gone from newbies to average. Whether it's Spyro or Dragon Age, the online game world is yours, make the most of your gaming journey or don't its YOUR choice.
