'Outlast' Game Review

A Voyage into Hell

Outlast is a first-person horror game available on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Linus, and OS X. This game is not for the faint of heart. Even on easy, you will often find yourself hiding under a bed or in a closet until the danger passes or until you feel you have the guts to continue playing. You'll need to conserve your battery power as using the night vision on your camcorder runs it down quickly.

It wouldn't be horror without the baddies and an added or rather, in this case, subtracted element, the element to defend yourself. There are no weapons for you in this game, the inmates of Mount Massive Asylum have a few to use on you though. It's just you and the camcorder. Run, hide, peek and wait, if you want to survive here, you're going to need to think on your feet and fast.

You play as Miles Upshur, a freelance journalist who has received an anonymous email detailing that inhumane experiments are being performed at Mount Massive Asylum. Once Miles enters Mount Massive Asylum, he discovers mutilated corpses, ransacked rooms, and not a guard in sight... they're all dead. The inmates are free and while some are violent and will kill you on sight, the others can be observed talking to themselves or to you about the horrors of what has become a house of torture. Their faces paint only part of the picture of what terror lays ahead.

As if the usual inmates patrolling and searching the areas aren't enough, you'll have one other to deal with. A giant of a man who can rip your head clean off and can be seen doing it to an inmate as you view from above. Chris Walker shows up several times during the course of your journey for the truth as to what is happening in Mount Massive and for many, he may be too much to handle. When you're in the sewer and see the ladder to escape through in the middle of the room which is pitch black and then you hear Chris Walker walking and breathing, that's when you feel fear, helpless and need to use your ears... and change your underwear.

Once the inmates, including Chris Walker, see you, they will chase after you and search for you. If you're under a bed or in a locker they will search the area for you and pull you out then kill you unless you're lucky enough to escape first. There are also the naked twins to avoid and a friendly man called Richard Trager who carries a pair of huge scissors that would make Edward Scissorhands jealous. Voyage further, that is if you manage to escape Richard's clutches, and the nature of these horrific experiments will soon be revealed.

If you think you have got what it takes you should get this game, it's amazing how it can turn a grown man into a quivering wreck just from being chased down a hall. Persevere and you will be rewarded with a dark and twisted story, with lots of information packed into the many documents for you to find you'll get a better understanding and insight into what horrors were being performed at the asylum.

If you're lucky enough to complete it, try it on Nightmare difficulty. If you die here, it's game over and you're thrown back to the start of the game; that's frustrating but fun. I loved playing this game and often stream it, I give it 9.5/10 because it's so immersive and twisted and has the ability to give the player and anyone watching some serious jump scares.
