Role play is a fun and creative way to escape the boring, stressful routine of your everyday reality. You get to create your own world, be whoever and whatever you want to, you can do anything and everything you could ever dream of without the danger of getting hurt or killed in real life. While it is very exciting, it can also be a bit overwhelming if you have no prior experience at doing it. Looking around at other role players who seem to know everything while you yourself haven't the faintest idea what you are doing. You are probably asking yourself, "Where do I begin? What should I know before starting a role play? How can I know the basic rules of a role play room before entering the room?" Well I am here to hopefully give you a helping hand and answer some of these questions for you. The first thing you should know is some of the terms and phrases you will likely come across in your journey into the world of role play. So let's take a look shall we and get you acquainted with "Role Play Terms and Phrases for Beginners."

RP

Starting off easy, if you see RP in a room description that means it is a role-playing room. RP is just a short way of saying role play. This also means anything posted in this room is more than likely part of the role play and NOT real life, therefore should not be viewed as real life.

OOC

Depending on how this is presented it can mean one of two things. If it is shown simply as OOC, it will mean out of character. That everything said there is being said by the actual people, not their characters in the RP. Some rooms will have this for a group of people who RP together but use that specific room for out of character conversations to discuss/talk about real life outside of the RP. However, if it is shown as ((OOC)), it is saying that even though the room is mostly for role play, you can still talk out of character, you just have to put all out of character conversation in (()) to show it is out of character.

Example: ((Hey, sorry I missed your message earlier I was in the bathroom.))

It is important to note though that most people will get annoyed if you do this too much while there is an active RP going on. So if you have a lot to say out of character, you should either send it to them in a private message or an OOC room.

Multi RP

Just like the name suggests, Multi RP is having multiple RPs. If someone tells you they're a Multi RP'er, they are telling you they have multiple RP characters in different RPs.

Mods

In a nutshell, Mods are room moderators. They help the room owner keep everything in order and are chosen by the room owner for meeting whatever standards the room owner has for running the room. Mods can boot people from rooms if the person is breaking the rules and causing too much trouble. Typically, if the room owner is not present for any reason, the room Mods are in charge and what they say goes.

God Moding

If your character cannot be killed, ca not be harmed, and is all-powerful with the ability to destroy an enemy instantly, that is considered God Moding, which is not valid RP. No one is immune to death's grasp, even in the RP world. You have to always remember that no matter how strong you may be in the RP, you can still be killed. Things that are also considered God Moding are: instant hits, you cannot make an attack land on your opponent (you must always leave the possibility for them to dodge or counter), trying to control your opponent's movements ((stating that their character is hurt by/frightened by/confused by anything they are not yours to control)), and never taking any damage from an attack, even with armor and a strong body; you eventually will have to take damage from an attack, you can't just brush everything off like it was nothing ((again, everything can die)). If you God Mod and refuse to stop, eventually people will not be willing to RP with you because God Mod RP is not really considered valid RP.

T1, T2,T3, T4, T5

I am lumping these all together because they all are different from each other but at the same time fall into the same category. They refer to the type of RP you will be expected to do in the room. Depending on which one you see, the room owners will expect you to be able to do that type of RP. It is common to see T1, T2, or T3 as the preferred type. But on occasion, you will see T4 or even T5 allowed in the room, that is EXTREMELY rare though. you should always check to see which T style RP a room wants you to use and make a judgement on whether or not to participate in RP in that room on if you believe you are capable of performing that level of RP or not ((I will go into further detail on the differences in each T style in another article later on)).

NKZ

If a room has NKZ in its description, that means the room is a no kill zone. This protects you and other players from having their character killed while in that room. No one is allowed to kill another player while in a NKZ room, the kill will be considered void if they try. So if you are just starting out at RP and do not have much skill in an RP fight yet, NKZ rooms would be ideal for you because your character would essentially be in a "safe zone." If you are someone who has to go brb ((be right back)) or afk ((away from keyboard)), NKZ rooms would also be ideal for you for the same reason. If a room does NOT have NKZ in its description and is not labeled as an OOC room, then you should approach it as a room where you CAN be killed and keep your guard up at all times while in the room. It is normal to see NKZ paired with NFZ and/or NWZ.

NFZ

Like the NKZ, this means the room is relatively safe to be in. NFZ means no fight zone. Meaning that you cannot be attacked while in this room, and you cannot attack another character while in this room. You will usually see it paired with NKZ and/or NWZ.

NWZ

A room marked as NWZ means that the room is a no weapons zone. Your character will not be allowed to carry weapons in the room. A room that is NOT an NKZ or NFZ can be a NWZ meaning that you CAN fight and you CAN kill other characters in that room you just CANNOT do so while carrying a weapon. You will often see a NWZ paired with an NKZ and/or an NFZ.

Now that you have been introduced to some of the most common and basic terms and phrases that you will come across in RP, you should find navigating the world of RP a little easier and can start thinking about taking the next step in starting your RP life. While there are lots of things to remember, the most important thing to keep in mind is JUST HAVE FUN. RP is meant to be an escape, and if you're not having fun with it, then what's the point?
