The Best Operators In 'Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege'

Written From the Point of View of a Silver-Tier Player

“Mute”, an operator in Rainbow Six Siege.

Popular tactical shooter Rainbow Six Siege has lasted three years. Over this period, they’ve released 18 new operators (the character you play) to their original cast of 20, excluding Recruit (the basic soldier). Statistics pulled from pro-league play show that on average, three speed operators are the best—but is it the truth?

Decal showing the operator icons of most of the operators.

Around 50 percent of the player base plays within the Gold rank or lower. Personally, I’ve made it somewhere into gold, but always drop back down to high bronze or low silver. By no means am I a great player, but I’ve still seen which operators are picked more, and which operators bring the most utility. In other words, here’s which operators I think get the most work done.

Bell-curve of player ranks.

I will be picking two operators from the base game for attack and defense, and two operators from the DLC expansions for both sides too. This means I will be picking eight operators in total. So, here we go.

Offense Operators

The love story between Mr. Kr.... Thatcher & Thermite.

BASE GAME: These two tried and true operators have served us well. Thermite will place his special breaching charge on a reinforced wall and melt through any defense the opposing team put in front of you. What if the signal between your charge and the remote detonator is jammed, or the reinforced wall is electrified? Well, Thatcher will just toss an EMP grenade at the area and destroy anything that was giving Thermite trouble. These two operators are a staple of any attacking team throughout all ranks.

Finka’s Operator symbol.

DLC: The first operator to come to my mind is Finka. She is one of the two newest operators (as of writing this article). She is part of the CBRN unit, which is made up of a GIGN operator and a Spetsnaz operator. Finka is from the Russian fleet, and she helps people rush-in! Bad puns aside, Finka’s Adrenal Surge is a solid ability. It activates in every single one of her team mates, regardless of their distance from Finka. If an OVERLORD (Mute’s special ability) is in the way, the nanobots Finka put inside her team will not activate. This boost raises your HP, lowers your recoil, picks up fallen teammates, and at one point, increases your speed. That was where Ubisoft drew the line and removed the speed boost before Finka left test servers. The boost Finka gives almost always provides benefit, even if you didn’t get into a gun fight. For this reason, I think she is incredible!

Zofia, a Polish operator.

The second DLC operator I’m picking is Zofia. She is often called “the better Ash,” but I disagree. While her gadget does bring some of the same utility that Ash’s does, she comes with so much more. Zofia’s gadget, the KS79 LIFELINE, is a double barrel grenade launcher that can shoot two grenades that explode upon impact, and then four concussion grenades that explode when they are within a certain proximity of an enemy. This allows you to traverse the map on your own, know how close your enemies are, and blind anyone in the room you’re about to charge into. She can also bring breach charges as her equipment, allowing her to break through three more soft-walls or windows. At two armor and two speed, with the ability to open five soft-walls, Zofia brings so much utility with just one operator that she has to be considered one of the best.

Defense Operators

Mute and his operator icon.

BASE GAME: If it wasn’t a little obvious from the foreshadowing of the very first photo, Mute is one of the best operators for defense. I have a personal affinity for shotguns, and the one his CTU brings is pretty nice. His gadget, OVERLORD (while in the Elite skin) or GC90 “Moni” Signal Disruptor, commonly referred to as “Mute Jammer,” can jam the signal between other operator gadgets, block you from world-wide abilities, and stop drones in their tracks. With one OVERLORD, you can prevent two walls from being destroyed by things like Thermite’s exothermic charger. This is better than Bandit, as it gives no hint that the wall is jammed until you try to activate whatever is being jammed, and two walls are covered by one gadget rather than Bandit’s 1:1 ratio. This makes him a pick that fits in nearly every team.

Rook in his natural habitat.

Rook holds a special place in the hearts of all of my friend group. He was the first defense operator we were all told to purchase and play with. His purpose is simple: place down your box full of sweater vests and look pretty. His gadget is just armor plating that gives the defensive team a little bit more damage they can take everywhere but their head. Some people will argue that Rook isn’t a good pick, that the enemy team will just get headshots. This may be the case in pro-league, but not in my ELO. Headshots do not occur in 100 percent of kills here, and frankly, I doubt it happens in 40 percent of them. So, that little bit of protection can mean life or death in some situations. For operators with one armor, it gives them just a small boost that’ll help them live longer.

Leison’s operator icon.

DLC: Leison is my favorite operator in all of Siege. I find that both of his weapons just work well. I can do great things with either the shotgun or sub-machine gun. His gadget his wonderful too. The Gu-Mine is simple: it explodes, does damages, and leaves poisonous shrapnel in your opponent. This shrapnel will tick away at their health, making it so are constantly taking damage and cannot run. With the introduction of Finka, it was also buffed in a way. If an enemy with Finka’s boost hits one of Leison’s traps, their boost is automatically removed. This makes Leison a great counter to Finka. Not to mention how he cripples any push forcing them to slow down or leave them self vulnerable and remove the poisoned needle.

The final operator I’d like to discuss is Valkyrie. She can bring so much valuable information to your team, if played well. Her Blackeye cameras can be placed around the map to give your team just a little bit more coverage. A good Valkyrie will set up cameras in high traffic areas and places to watch your team's back. Different camera positions offer great vantage points—so much so that they can often cover more than one room. If your team avoids marking the enemies under the camera, the enemy will never know that you’re watching their every move, and that you're coordinating an attack on them as they slowly shuffle through the room.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I think the best offense operators are Thermite & Thatcher (for the base game) as well as Finka & Zofia (for the DLC). The best defense operators are Mute & Rook (for the base game) as well as Leison & Valkyrie (for the DLC). This is based off of my opinion, experiences in the Silver-Gold ELO, and my friends' opinions. Very little is based off of the actual stats provided by pro-league players. Us average players don’t do the things the pros do, so the go-to operators are a little different.

What’re your picks for the best operators? Do you disagree with anything I’ve said?
