Two Popular Video Games Turned into Live-Action Films

Why one is better than the other

Popular video games turned into live-action films has been a favorite thing to do. Two films are getting released Detective Pikachu Pokémon and Sonic the Hedgehog. In my opinion, Detective Pikachu Pokémon looks more promising because the characters seem so realistic, almost like they could actually exist. There was so much detail on the Pokémon—everything from the hairs, the skin, even the eyes. This was possible thanks to RJ Palmer, a concept artist at Ubisoft. He used real animals for inspiration, and when he draws, RJ Palmer said he uses a Wacom tablet and Adobe Photoshop. RJ Palmer has been doing concept art for characters and the environment, which is why he helps come up with the initial design for Pokémon. The other reason I think the film was great is because it's not starting from the very beginning like other productions have when making a film. The story of the film begins from another, in fact, an actual game that is called Detective Pikachu Pokémon. It follows a guy name Tim Goodman who teams up with a Pikachu that is more intelligent than any other Pikachu, and yes Tim can understand him, just like the film. The main Pokémon protagonist Pikachu is voiced by Ryan Reynolds. I thought that was amazing because I felt like I was watching Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds plays the Marvel comic "Merc with a month" character Deadpool). The film has a slapstick comedy feel to it, and it has the right message in the movie but you got to see the movie to see what I mean.

Another popular game that is coming out in theaters this summer is Sonic the Hedgehog. I'm just going to be honest, I was in total disgust with the design of the character Sonic and the film. He looks absolutely fake. Unlike Pokémon you can literally see Sonic's design doesn't match the environment of the film, and he looks nothing like the game. First off, his eyes are too small. If you see all the games and the cartoons you will see Sonic's eyes are quite large. Second he is too thin. In the game and cartoon he has a little gut (this is done to the fact that he loves chili dogs) and short legs, and finally, his shoes are small. Seriously just look at the game the boots are large they stand out as well as his white socks. And if I can point out the antagonist and Sonic's archenemy Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman as he is known in some of the games and some cartoons) who is supposed to be a bit chunky, have a substantial red mustache, and be bald. Dr. Robotnik is being played by Jim Carrey. Don't get me wrong, Jim Carrey is funny as hell but to see him as looney as Dr. Robotnik, I'm going to have to say that's a maybe. One thing I did notice right away from the trailer of Sonic the Hedgehog was I didn't see Tails the Fox or my favorite character Knuckles the Echidna.

I really don't see a positive outcome on Sonic the Hedgehog because I wasn't the only one who saw the issue with the design of Sonic. I did read somewhere that the director was going to make the changes due to the fans not being happy. But so far I haven't seen a thing changed.

Pokemon got a high score on Rotten Tomatoes and fans all over were completely satisfied with not just the story of the film, but the concept of art was amazing.
