Wish You Could Build Your Own Battle Vehicle, Worthy of ‘Fury Road?’

Try 'Crossout,' still free in beta version!

Available on PC and Xbox, Crossout is still in its Beta stage, and yes, still free! Best described as a fast paced post-apocalyptic MMO, little to no story line, but enough action to make you not care.

Let me get the cons out of the way first, as with most games, you can pay to win, although if you lack skill in the driving aspect it might be a bit harder to just pay your way to the top. Although it is worth mentioning, all of the micro packs and DLC are available in the marketplace, easily saved up for if you are like me, and have bills to pay instead of putting your money into a free game. Second, as I mentioned above, there is not much story line at all, as of right now, and I'm not sure there needs to be. Lastly, the AI and match-making in the game leave plenty to be desired.

Onto the good bits now, once you've got the game you can totally customize the build of your vehicle, from plenty of tire selections, to even more body parts for the vehicle. The selection of weapons, defense items, and even cabins can keep you building different vehicles until the sun comes up. I could personally spend a whole gaming session putting together a new build, but if you aren't into customizing your own vehicle there is an exhibition with blueprints other players have uploaded. You can even test drive them before you assemble them! Even better is a newer feature that takes the parts in your inventory and randomizes a logical build with them.

The vehicle parts are connected to your level, there are currently six factions you can choose from, which all give you different parts as you level up. There is one main faction, in which everyone must play, so you are always leveling up in two different factions, which is a plus for those of you who get a dopamine rush when you hit that next level. Leveling up in the main faction caps at level 30, and after that you rank into prestige levels. The options in the game are incredibly varied, from missile launchers, machine guns, small drone vehicles and even hovercrafts — you have the option to be as fast as you can, or as tanked as you want to be. There are force fields and invisibility cloaks, the list of options is near limitless and definitely worth taking a look at. The weapons, cabins and most other parts are ranked from common, all the way up to relic parts.

Onto the juicy part, the battles! The main battles are for parts, scrap metal and gas, all of which can be sold on the market, which is how I've made my money and got the better parts in game. If you aren't interested in a capture the flag type, eight vs eight, they have raids instead. Raids are more mission style, with you and three other players battling against AI to protect or retrieve objectives. They've even started implementing newer battles types, one that starts everyone with the same vehicle and one shot gets you a kill, another called bedlam where it's everyone against everyone else. Last, but definitely not least would be clan battles.

Players can create their own 20 player clan, enlisting the best from the wasteland and battling in four on four clan battles for ranking in the game. Even without a clan you can group up with your friends and play in battles together, max of four people in group together.

If you haven't tried Crossout yet, you are missing out! I have been playing for two years, and when you get sick of it switching to another vehicle which will challenge you as much as starting a new game.

Good luck out there gamers, may you all prosper in the post-apocalypse.
